It is also known as Prunus africana, African Prune, African Plum tree, African pygeum, Pygeum africanus and Prunier d’Afrique.
Pygeum africanum is an African herb predominant in South Africa. It is majorly used to treat symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (prostate enlargement) as well as accompanying clinical manifestations such as pain during urination, inflammation of the prostate glands and urinary tract problems.
Mode of Action
Pygeun africanum is naturally abundant in bioactive compounds such as ferulic acids, triterpenes and phytosterols. Ferulic acid inhibits a buildup of cholesterol in the prostrate. Phytosterols inhibit the synthesis and secretion of prostaglandin which helps in turn inhibits transmission of pain signals to the brain. Triterpenes inhibits the action of enzymes responsible for damaging connective tissue hence is huge potential in curbing prostate enlargement.
Side Effects
Pygeum africanum may cause constipation, nausea and diarrhea.
Dosage
Oral formulations of Pygeum africanum are sufficient for an adult between the ranges of 75-200mg daily. For best results use it alongside other prostrate medications.
Contraindications
It has not been demonstrated whether or not Pygeum africanum ingredients can enter breast milk but to be on the safe side, lactating mothers must be cautious.
